Drug Uses
Zovirax is prescribed to treat herpes infections of the skin, lip, and genitals; herpes zoster (shingles); and chickenpox. It does not heal herpes infections but relieves pain and itching and promotes healing. Topical Zovirax does not prevent the recurrence of sores but relieves pain and itching if applied when the earliest symptoms first appear. Taken orally, Zovirax decreases the frequency and severity of recurrent sores, but it is suitable only for patients with severe herpes infections as there may occur adverse effects. This medication can be used for other problems. For further information, consult your doctor. Alarm your doctor about any unusual condition that you may experience or you find especially bothersome.
How Taken
Treatment with Zovirax topical have to be started as soon as you notice the first symptoms, such as tingling, burning, blisters. After each use of Zovirax, make sure you wash your hands. You can apply the drug by a glove or a finger cot or an applicator (e.g. cotton swab) in order to avoid spreading the virus to other body parts and to other people. You should apply enough substance to cover the lesion(s) completely. A one-half inch ribbon of ointment covers approximately 4 square inches of surface area. Avoid any eye contact to the drug. Zovirax topical is usually applied every 3 hours, six times a day in a period of seven days. You should follow your doctor’s instructions. You should take Zovirx during the whole treatment period even if you start feeling a lot better. Your symptoms may start to improve before the infection is completely treated. You should keep the lesions caused by herpes viruses as clean and dry as possible. It is recommended to be worn loose clothing to prevent irritation of the lesions.
Warnings/Precautions
Before starting treatment with Zovirax topical, it is essential to tell your doctor if you have any other medical conditions or if you are taking any other medications. Zovirax topical is in the FDA pregnancy category C.There is not any information if it can cause any harm to an unborn baby. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or if there is a chance to get pregnant during treatment. Zoloft is not known to get into breast milk and whether it may have negative influences on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Missed Dose
If you forget a dose, apply it as soon as you remember and apply further doses at your regular interval (e.g., every 3 hours) until you go to bed. If it is too closed to your next dose, skipped the missed one and resume to your normal dose schedule. You should not take two doses in order to make up for the missed one.
Possible Side Effects
There haven’t been declared any serious side effects regarding treatment with Zovirax topical. You may observe an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; rash; hives; itching; swelling of your lips, tongue, or stinging, itching, burning, or a rash. In such case contact your doctor but do not stop treatment. There can appear also symptoms that are not listed above.
Storage
Keep below 25oC. Do not refrigerate.
Overdose
In case of an overdose, contact your physician. Overdoses are unlikely to occur.
More Information
Zovirax Cream must not be used by patients known to be hypersensitive to acyclovir or propylene glycol. Zovirax is most effective if started within 48 hours of the appearance of the first symptoms. You should strictly follow your doctor’s instruction.
