Drug Uses
Gris-PEG is purposed to treat the following ringworm infections: Barber's itch (inflammation of the facial hair follicles), Ringworm of the body, Athlete's foot, Ringworm of the nails, Ringworm of the groin and thigh, Ringworm of the scalp. As Gris-PEG is efficient only for certain types of fungal infections, your doctor needs to perform tests to identify the source of infection.
How Taken
It is very important your doctor to determine the right diagnosis of the infecting organism. The usual adult dose is 330 mg (as a single dose or in divided amounts) and it is enough to give you a satisfactory response. For children –enough dose is approximately 3.3 mg per pound of body weight per day.
Warnings/Precautions
Gris-PEG is likely to cause light sensitiveness so its better to avoid exposure to intense natural or artificial sunlight. Contact your doctor if you develop lupus erythematosus (a form of rheumatism) or a lupus-like condition. Possible signs of lupus include red butterfly rash over the nose arthritis, and cheeks, weakness, tiredness, sensitivity to sunlight, and skin eruptions. If you are using Gris-PEG for a long period of time, your physician should perform regular tests, including periodic examination of liver function, kidney function, and blood cell production. Gris-PEG is not safe and effective for preventing fungal infections. Gris-PEG leads to decrease of the efficiency of birth-control pills. You may need to use additional protection while you are taking Gris-PEG. Men should wait at least 6 months after the therapy with Gris-PEG is over before they become future fathers. Women should avoid becoming pregnant during the time of the treatment.
Missed Dose
If it happens to miss a dose, take it as soon as you notice. If it is already time for the next one, skip the forgotten one and go back to your usual dose schedule. Do not take two doses at a time to catch up.
Possible Side Effects
There may occur reactions related to hypersensitivity such as urticaria, skin rashes, erythema multiform-like drug reactions, and rarely, angioneurotic edema, and you may need do discontinue therapy and take appropriate countermeasures. If you take the drug for a long period of time, you may experience paresthesias of the hands and feet. Other side effects include, nausea, oral thrush, vomiting, diarrhea, epigastria distress, headache, dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, mental confusion, and impairment of performance of routine activities. In case of granulocytopenia, you need to stop treatment immediately. Serious reactions usually occur if Gris-PEG is taken for prolonged time periods or in high doses, or both.
Storage
Gris-PEG tablets should be stored at controlled room temperature 15°-30°C (59°-86°F) in tight, light-resistant containers.
Overdose
Gris-PEG overdoses causes dangerous consequences. If you doubt an overdose of Gris-PEG, find emergency medical treatment immediately.
More Information
Gris-PEG increases the effects of alcohol. The combination between Gris-PEG and alcohol leads to faster heart beat and flushed skin. Taking Gris-PEG together with other drugs may lead to increased, decreased, or altered effects. Advise your doctor before combining Gris-PEG with the following: Blood-thinning drugs such as Barbiturates such as Phenobarbital, Oral Contraceptives, Coumadin.
