Drug Uses
Elidel is a drug, purposed for external use to fight atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema. It should be applied only on your skin. It is for adults and children 2 years old and above. It can be used as for a short time thus also for intermittent long periods of treatment. Intermittent long period is when you start and stop applying the drug repeatedly, as your doctor has prescribed it. Elidel can be applied on all damaged skin areas, including neck and face.
How Taken
Elidel cream 1% should be applied to the damaged skin areas twice a day and rubbed in gently and completely. It can be used on all skin surfaces, including the head and neck. Elidel must be used in the mentioned dose as long as the symptoms stay. The treatment can be stopped when all eczema signs disappear. If you still have the same symptoms after 6 weeks of treatment, your condition should be reconsidered. The treated with Elidel Cream areas should be exposed and not under occlusion. The drug should not be used with occlusive dressings.
Warnings/Precautions
In case you suffer from the congenital skin disorder and Netherton's syndrome, its very important to consult your doctor and do not use Elidel without prescription. You should also inform your doctor if you have an immune system disease, a skin infection or you use other type of skin product (e.g., cream, ointment, lotion, etc.). If you experience any of the listed above health problems, it it possible that Elidel may not be appropriate for you, you may need as special dose adjustment or special medical observation during treatment. Elidel is in the FDA pregnancy category C. There is not any information if Elidel can cause any harm to an unborn baby. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or if there is a chance to get pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether Elidel gets into breast milk and whether it may have negative influences on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. This drug is not suitable for children under 2 years of age.
Missed Dose
In case you have forgotten a dose, take it as soon as you notice. If it is too close to the next one, ignore the missed one and resume your usual dose schedule.
Possible Side Effects
Very common side effects are the feeling of burning or warmth in the treated area. This burning feeling stays only in the first 5 days of the therapy and then fades away. In most cases it is mild or moderate. Contact your doctor if you have more serious reaction and if it stays more then one week. Other possible side effects are: headache, and with long-term intermittent use, cold/stuffy nose, sore throat, influenza, fever, viral infection, and cough. Herpes skin infections can also appear (like cold sores, shingles, chicken pox) also warts, or swollen lymph nodes (glands).
Storage
Keep at 25°C (77°F); room temperature can vary between 15°C-30°C (59°F-86°F). Prevent from freezing.
Overdose
There hasn’t been declared any overdose symptoms. In case of oral ingestion, you should find instant medical help.
More Information
During the treatment period, you should avoid skin exposure to sunlight and sun lamps, Avoid sunlight and sun lamps, treatments with UVA or UVB light and tanning beds. If you need to go outside after you have been treated with Elidel, wear loose clothing and make sure the affected areas are protected from the sun. Consult your doctor about any additional sun protections that you should use. Unless you doctor advises you so, do not use any other skin products on the treated areas.
